Why
To improve the next version of our design system, my coworker Leah Roides and I created a new icon set to complement our new system and typeface.
We partnered with Dalton Maag, creators of Airbnb's Cereal typeface, to create a brand new typeface, that would become the face of Spectrum. We wanted to make sure our icon set accompanied our UI and paired perfectly with our new font.
After many rounds of drawing, editing, and testing, we created something that captured the uniqueness of the font. Like our new typeface, our icons look good at all sizes and combine sharp and funky curved edges.
While creating the icon library was a giant task in itself, we also supported development teams using the icons by creating documentation that helped us ensure consistent usage. As more teams adopt our icons, we're constantly adding, supporting and improving upon our icons.
