Why
In late 2019 the Spectrum product org reorganized in efforts to be more efficient. With that came friction with team culture, transparency, and universal understanding org-wide. I was asked to create a platform that would help the newly formed org during the transitional period. We started by conducting research in the form of a generalized survey that helped us understand what problems we needed to solve for, and one-on-one interviews with a variety of team members to gather more specifics and understanding at an individual level. The results allowed us to figure out what features would aid employees during this difficult time. We decided on a core set of features for MVP and then worked with our stakeholders to identify what we could use this platform for moving forward. Through the interviews we learned that users wanted to grow culture and gain a better understanding of the newly developed team. Due to COVID new members were unable to meet their teammates with ease so providing additional information in an easy to consume manner was paramount.

Challenges
Post research the team decided on launching with 1. A form that would gather information from employees to populate the site. 2. Features that allowed users to learn more about their new teams, coworkers, and organizational structure and 3. An inclusive platform that worked for all users regardless of ability, geographic location, or team. Future workshops with stakeholders revealed that they also wanted the platform to assist in the acquisition of winning internal work from other teams in the company. At Spectrum, we compete with external agencies to win internal work due to our large size. We also were not effective in advertising our capabilities and show off the work we were doing. Our stakeholders were confident that we would be able to win work with the use of this platform. This site needed to be a tool for current teams and a marketing site that demonstrated what capabilities our organization had and what work we could help external teams accomplish.
Solution
A platform that allows team members to search teams and individuals by name, capability, and by a variety of different tags. Pages for each individual and team gives more specific information and context. We also wanted a platform that can show off our great work and aid in winning new work from internal groups. As we grow and add features we are researching to ensure that we bring value with every update. Employees are currently learning more about each other and the new teams bringing newfound camaraderie and understanding across the org. We are also leading the way from a design perspective bringing new components and visual elements as well as setting the standard around a11y requirements. Our latest feature gives users the ability to listen to an audio intro helping certain users match voices to names.
