Why
Our network operating center (NOC), the command center that manages our nationwide network improvements, outages, and maintenance, had 6+ applications they used to do everyday tasks. NOC came to us for help in consolidating the many tools they used to one powerful application that allowed them to schedule and deploy technicians, investigate a multitude of different errors, send communications to users experiencing outages, as well as other technical tasks.

As this tool would need to show information dense datasets, we needed the ability to show very complex, data heavy flows. However, many of the typical network problems did not require the breath of information as some of the more complex investigations. NOC also hired technicians of varying skills who may not need to see the more complex data.
Thus, we designed Lighthouse with progressive disclosure where we initially shared the most minimal data and allowed either more experience technicians or more complex issues to show the additional detailed technical data. We tested and collaborated with the NOC technicians every step along the way to build a tool that saves the company millions of dollars annually, and more importantly a tool that the technicians love to use.
We also had the opportunity to ride with technicians in the field to test out the companion mobile app that gave the field techs relevant job and order information. The mobile app also synced with some of their high tech network equipment to improve their work flow.
Having the ability to improve the workday of those who are out in the field making sure our user's service is top-quality, was a very rewarding experience.
